Black Oxide Finishing at West-Tech

West-Tech Finishing Inc. provides black oxide finishing for ferrous metal components requiring a uniform black appearance with minimal dimensional change. Unlike paint or plating, black oxide is a chemical conversion treatment that reacts directly with the metal surface, forming a thin, dark oxide layer rather than depositing a separate coating.

This process is especially suitable for precision-machined components such as threads, shafts, gears, tooling, and fasteners, where maintaining tight tolerances and proper fit is essential. The resulting finish also reduces light reflection while preserving the underlying surface characteristics of the component.

Our black oxide capabilities include processing to MIL-DTL-13924 Class 1 and Class 2, as well as AMS 2485, supporting aerospace, defence, and industrial applications. While black oxide alone provides limited corrosion resistance, supplementary oils and preservatives can offer additional protection depending on application requirements.

For an accurate quote, include the material alloy, applicable specification and class, part dimensions, quantity, and any additional finishing requirements with your RFQ.

Black oxide is a chemical conversion process that creates a uniform black finish on ferrous metals, including carbon steel and low-alloy steel. Unlike traditional coatings, black oxide chemically reacts with the metal surface, producing minimal dimensional change while preserving tight tolerances. The process provides a low-reflectance finish and can be combined with protective oils or preservatives to enhance corrosion resistance, making it ideal for precision-machined components, fasteners, tooling, and industrial applications.
